How does the food you eat affect your brain


I’m one of those people who completely loses their appetite when stressed. This wasn’t much of an issue until I lost my appetite for two months straight and my body and my mental heath spiralled.

There was a day when I was driving to work and my foot was shaking when I pressed the clutch because I was so weak. I thought to myself at the time “what have I eaten lately?” and remembered I’d forced myself to eat a banana about 48 hours earlier. I went down to 7 stone and at 5'5" this wasn't a great look. My skin looked horrific and none of my clothes fit. Luckily I’m coming from a place now where I love food again and it feels great to be able to fill out a pair of jeans and have my curves back. How and ever, this blog is all about balance so here are the things I learned about food on my journey.

1. Fish

If you can eat a portion of fish every day it contributes greatly to your brain health. In Norway they have very few daylight hours and in winter they have no sun at all. This has led to Norway having what is considered a high suicide rate. In Iceland, they have similar daylight hours but their suicide rate is much lower. I am told this is because the Icelandic people eat an average of a pound and a half of fish per day.

2. Eggs

Eggs contain all the nutritional value required to create life and as such they are the perfect thing to eat to get all of your required nutrients in one sitting. They are the perfect health food.

3. Greens

The general consensus appears to note that consumption of green vegetables is a great heart healer, both physically and emotionally. Depending on whatever greens are your favourite or available locally I would suggest hitting the shops and picking some up.

4. Bone broth

I was also told bone broth was a one stop shop for healing and health, but the name of it just sounded gross so I avoided this tip. I didn’t even want to look this one up so I can’t tell you much about it. Go Google it yourself

My personal experience was that I found it very difficult to do anything when I felt low - not to mind a grocery shop - so I found it difficult to cook and look after myself but if you can manage to pick up some eggs, fish and some green foods then you are golden.

When you feel better and you start to enjoy food again then it’s perfectly acceptable to treat yourself with pizza and cake. And wine. It is all about balance after all.
